What Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

A Specialized Form of Physiotherapy

Used to treat conditions within the pelvis, such as incontinence, urgency, pelvic pain, nocturia, pelvic organ prolapse, and dyspareunia (pain with intercourse).

The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles found around the pelvic bone and sacrum. They act like a hammock or sling, contracting and relaxing to support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs.

Treatment Solutions for Pelvic Health

Pelvic health concerns can affect bladder and bowel control, sexual health, exercise, pregnancy, recovery after childbirth, and everyday quality of life.

Although these problems are common, they are not something you simply have to live with.

Pelvic Floor Conditions We Treat

We assess and treat dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles, whether they are too weak, too tight, or uncoordinated,  using education, targeted exercise, and manual therapy.

Pelvic health physiotherapy may help people experiencing:

  • Urinary leakage, incontinence, urgency and frequency
  • Pelvic organ prolapse symptoms
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Bowel control or constipation concerns
  • Pelvic-floor muscle dysfunction
  • Pelvic-floor concerns during pregnancy including pelvic, low-back pain, recovery after vaginal or Caesarean birth and return to exercise after childbirth
  • Diastasis recti and abdominal recovery
  • Pelvic-floor concerns following pelvic or prostate surgery

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy for Men

Pelvic floor dysfunction isn’t only a women’s health issue. Men can experience pelvic pain, urinary urgency, and post-surgical concerns following pelvic or prostate surgery.

Our physiotherapists provide the same thorough, individualized assessment and treatment for male patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

With your consent, your physiotherapist performs an internal assessment (vaginal and/or rectal for women, rectal for men) to evaluate pelvic floor muscle strength, tension, and tenderness. It is performed only after a full explanation, and only with your ongoing consent.

We provide direct billing and most extended health benefits plans cover physiotherapy, which typically includes pelvic health physiotherapy.

A physician’s referral is generally not required to book physiotherapy in Ontario. However, some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement, so check your individual plan.

There is no single time that is appropriate for everyone. Women may seek physiotherapy during pregnancy because of pain, urinary symptoms, pelvic floor concerns, exercise questions or preparation for childbirth. Treatment is adapted to the stage of pregnancy and individual circumstances.
